Tolmin lies in the centre of the Soca valley, on a terrace above the confluence of the Soča and Tolminka rivers. It is surrounded by hills and mountains, so it offers unlimited options for hiking, shorter or longer walking tours.

The confluence of the Soca and the Tolminka Rivers

You have arrived at Hotel Dvorec and don't have much time but would still like to see or do something?

Most often overlooked, but a picture-perfect piece of the Soca valley is the confluence of the Soca and Tolminka rivers. Take a walk to the confluence, which is only few 100 meters from Hotel Dvorec. It offers beautiful views regardless the season. There are many easy walking paths underneath the tree canopies. It is also possible to visit a fish farm, the WW1 German Ossuary, or you can simply sit back, relax and breath in the beauty of pristine nature.
In summer, the confluence is a popular swimming point for locals and visitors, as well but it is difficult or impossible to reach it if there is a music festival in Tolmin and you are not attending.

Kozlov rob (castle ruins)

A short Hike to Kozlov rob is an ideal choice for a half-day trip or a simple aerobics training. Depending on your pace, a visit to castle ruins on Kozlov Rob will take you at least 1,5h.
Directions: From Hotel Dvorec go straight at traffic lights towards the village Zatolmin. At the crossroads in front of the church turn left and follow the main road for approx. 500m. On the right hand side you will see the signs to the trail that goes uphill into the woods. The trail is well maintained, not too steep and suited for families as well. Follow the marked spots towards the top of the hill where your effort gets rewarded with beautiful views of Tolmin and the surrounding part of the Soca valley.

Tolmin – Most na Soči

For a bit longer, but unpretentious hike, we recommend a trail next to the Soca river taking you from Tolmin to Most na Soči.
Directions: From Hotel Dvorec take the road towards the confluence of the Soca and Tolminka rivers. Cross the Tolminka river over a suspension bridge and stick to the trail that leads between the road and the Soca river. The trail between Tolmin and Most na Soči is approx. 3,5km long, and for a walk there and back you will need about 2h. The trail is suitable for anyone, as the terrain is gentle and the path well-maintained.

Mengore is an ascent arising from the Soča river on its right bank. For a trip to Mengore you will need at least 2-3h, yet we suggest Mengore as a half-day trip.
Access is possible from two sides:
- from Most na Soči in the direction of Nova Gorica, turn right after approx. 2 km, where you can find the parking place. Follow the marked trail towards the outdoor WW1 Museum and the view point Bučenica.
- from Tolmin in the direction of Nova Gorica, when you reach the top of the hill (after a steep curve) approx 500m from the village Volče, opposite the Gostol TST factory, turn left and park on the gravel road. Follow the marked trail and hike to the top of Mengore. When you exit the forest foot path and reach the gravel road, turn right and go downhill,  then continue onto the marked trail.
When you reach the view point Bučenica, you will find extraordinary views of Tolmin, its suroundings and the lake in Most na Soči.

Alpe Adria Trail

Alpe-Adria trail is a long distance hiking trail, which takes you from the glacier Großglockner in Austria, across Slovenian Alps and pre-alpine world to the Adriatic sea in Italy. Common thread of Alpe-Adira trail is ''Hiking in the garden of Eden'' which is a metaphore for extraordinary geographical and cultural diversity of these three lands with long common history.

Would you like to hike at least some of the Alpe-Adria-Trail, but you are not a fan of everyday packing?

Intermediate stage, which takes you from Bovec, adrenaline centre of the Soča valley, by the Virje and Boka waterfalls along the Soča river in the direction of Kobarid. At the end of the stage, you will turn towards a picturesque mountain village Drežnica, where you can take a look at the famous pilgrimage church Heart of Christ and the private collection of Botognica, presenting the WW1.
Should you be coming from the direction of Kranjska Gora, we will pick up your luggage in Bovec and deliver it to Hotel Dvorec. In case you will only do the stages from Hotel Dvorec, you will be transffered to the starting point in the morning after breakfast. We will also pick you up at the end of the stage in Drežnica and offer you a delicious dinner and a comfortable bed.
After the delicious breakfast the next morning, we will take you back to Drežnica, where you will continue on the AAT trail towards Tolmin.

26. stage: Drežnica – Tolmin

A difficult mountainous stage, will start in Drežnica, at the same place where we picked you up the previous day. Stage Drežnica — Tolmin is historically coloured, because it takes you on a former military trail in the Triglav National Park. You will pass the chapel Kapela na Planici, built in memory of fallen Italian soldiers. Then you will do the downhill hite to Planina Kuhinja, where the locals will show you how they make local cheese and other milk products. We advise buying local cheese or cottage cheese on Planina Kuhinja (or another dairy farm nearby, there are 4 nearby), because the animals graze in unspoiled nature and are not fed with any additives, so the taste is as pristine as it can be.
You will slowly descend from a height of more than 1000 m altitude, towards the Soca river.
Meanwhile you will be amazed by breathtaking waterfalls of the Volarja river and its tributaries. Especially beautiful is Brinta waterfall, which measures more than 100 meters in height and it is the 2nd highest waterfall in the  Soča valley. A beautiful forested, once military trail will take you to village Gabrje, where you will cross the road and descend to the Soča river and continue the trail next to the Soča all the way to Tolmin. To Hotel Dvorec, you will arrive on foot where we will offer delicious dinner and an overnight stay in a comfortable room.

27. stage : Tolmin – Tribil di Sopra (IT).

Start your day with a breakfast buffet after which you can start/continue the AAT trail at the confluence of the Soca and Tolminka rivers, then pass the church of Saint Daniel which is more than 500 years old. After a longer ascent on Kolovrat hill, you will find some amazing views of the Julian Alps and the Italian Venezia Giulia all the way to the Adriatic sea. On the top of Kolovrat, next to the AAT trail, there is an outdoor museum with a well preserved extensive system of the third Italian defense line from the 1st world war. The trail then passes the national border and it takes you down the Italian part of Kolovrat, to the village named Tribil di Sopra.
Your luggage will be delivered to your next acoomodation place in Tribil di Sopra, if you wish its possible to deliver it to Cividale as well. If you finish with your AAT adventure at this point, you will be transferred back to Tolmin, Hotel Dvorec.
The AAT guidebook with trail descriptions and maps is available at Hotel Dvorec,.
